The real name for the Olduvai area is Oldupai. The word is the name for the wild sisal plant that grows there. Apparently, the first scientist to visit the area mispronounced or misspelled the name. So it became known to the world as Olduvai, rather than Oldupai. The guide at the research center thinks this is extremely amusing, and in his presentation he repeats, many times, "Oldupai... Olduvai..." It gets a good laugh the first time.
